29-Sep: Andrea Gillis at the Plough & Stars

And then after Craigie Street, we went to see Andrea Gillis at the Plough & Stars. Her band is better than ever. I haven’t followed her closely (except for seeing the Rudds when they play in Cambridge), but I think there have been some lineup shifts: Lead guitarist switched within the last 18 months? Or maybe he’s been there forever. And then Asa Brebner helping out as a second guitar, so that’s really two lead guitars. And Michelle Paulhus on bass, replacing, I think, from awhile back, Tony Goddess.

She plays a wide range of styles, soul / R&B / rock . . . at times sounding like Etta James but with some Tina Turner in there as well. She can play a song that’s a bit worn out — Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise” — and make it new again. I haven’t seen a happier audience in Cambridge in a long, long time. And as is true every time I see Andrea Gillis solo, I can’t help but think that she should have gotten a bit more sun in the Rudds.

It is unusual for a band with so much guitar power to not be overwhelmed by it, but these guys were a marvel, keeping the leads short and in different styles.
